About The Owner

Emily Tynan McDaniel grew up gardening with her family in New England, and she always loved being outside.  After college, she enjoyed eight years as an educator in science and outdoor education. After earning her Master’s in Linguistics (her academic passion), she transitioned to working with a garden designer in Philadelphia.  She loved working outside, being in the dirt, designing new spaces for clients, and managing the crew, but missed teaching.  So in 2011, she founded Homegrown Gardening, LLC, which allowed her to not only work in gardens for clients, but also to teach any clients interested in learning to care for their outdoor spaces on their own.  She moved to Asheville in 2013 (pleased that Asheville and Philadelphia are in the same hardiness zone!) and brought Homegrown Gardening with her. Asheville has a great climate for gardening, and Emily loves working with the clients she has met.
